One of the main ideas for the Indecent design was that the building, covered in dust and rubble, was resurrected in a time of need for these characters to tell their story. The rubble that surrounds the platform is a huge part of that visual concept. In order to create it, I used all found materials, fabrics, and debris. Each object is a fossilized piece of a life, and the collection of them together represents how many times this story has been told before.
The Flying Carpet Festival would not exist without the people who dedicate their time, energy, and artistry year over year. To honor them, I pulled from festival photos to create the shadow box panel designs. Each panel features a real performer from the festival, and the frames are derived from the architecture of the circus school itself— an old, beautiful building in the heart of Mardin. The city has incredible iron and stonework; The heart designs are part of the gate to the front door, the flowers are from the window above the kitchen area where countless meals have been prepared, and so on.
